The Boy With Green Hair

“Please don’t tell why his hair turned green after you’ve seen The Boy With Green Hair!”

The Boy with Green Hair is a sci-fi movie released in 1948 about a boy whose hair turns green the day after he finds out he’s a war orphan. A fairly obvious parable for how wars affect children, this is a pretty average movie which is not nearly as entertaining as its name suggests. However, was is interesting is the theme song for the film, none other than “Nature Boy” by eden ahbez. If you don’t recognize the name, you’ll definitely recognize the song as it is the opening in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! The original recording of the song plays throughout the film creating an odd effect because of its modern associations. Funny how things happen... 2 stars.

“There was a boy,
A strange enchanted boy.
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea.
A little shy and sad of eye
But very wise was he.

And then one day,
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings,
This he said to me,
"The greatest thing
You’ll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return.”
